Meet me under the mistletoe! Enjoy a "Mistletoe Kiss"

December's "High Spirits Drink of the Month" is a variation on the Pomegranate Mistletoe Kiss.  Although it may not be quite as alluringly as mistletoe hanging from the ceiling, this sexy drink will help stir up romance this holiday! It was one of several specialty cocktails my wife and I featured at our Christmas party this year.

Pomegranate Mistletoe Kiss
1oz Vodka
3/4oz Grand Marnier
1oz Pomegranate Juice
Top with dry sparkling wine

Serve in a champagne flue garnished with several fresh pomegranate seeds

November's Drink of the Month - the "Perfect Cocktail"

Well it is a little late… but November is snifting season! As such, “High Spirits Drink of the Month” is the Perfect Cocktail. This leisurely drink is ideal for enjoying with a good friend by a crackling fireplace. Savor slowly while enjoying the aromas from the marriage of the two ingredients.

Can't find St Germaine? Go to Ikea!

St Germaine is a delicious & sophisticated liqueur that comes with the price tag to match.  Until recently it wasn’t available in Alberta let alone most of Canada.  I may have had the only bottle for in the whole city of Edmonton! I wanted to experiment with it and discover the cocktail possibilities. However, the short supply meant that I had to get creative with an alternative… along comes SAFT FL√ĄDER.  Saft Flader is Ikea’s elderflower syrup.  For under $8/500ml it was certainly worth a try!  Mixed with Vodka in equal parts, the result is 20% and a pretty good facsimile of St Germaine.  Now, there is no question it doesn’t have the aroma or smoothness of the real thing …but it is the best option for those on a budget or who live in areas where the real thing is in short supply.

October's Drink of the Month - the VESPER GREY

This is my take on the Vesper Martini from Ian Fleming’s 1953 James Bond novel “Casino Royale”.  Vesper Lynd was Bond’s precious dark haired lover & his most infamous betrayer.  The now legendary drink has undergone many adaptations. This version using Earl Grey tea adds a smooth sophisticated element that, like Vesper herself, is lovingly familiar yet daringly unexpected. I call it the “Vesper Grey”.

Vesper Grey
3 measures London Dry Gin
1 measure Earl Grey tea infused Russian Vodka*
½ measure Lillet

Shake with ice and serve in a chilled cocktail glass garnished with a thin lemon twist.
* To make the Earl Grey tea infused vodka add 6 teaspoons of the freshest loose tea you can find to a ¾ full bottle of premium Russian Vodka. Let the tea steep at room temperature for half an hour, shake, and seep for an additional half hour.  Strain the vodka using a mesh tea strainer and rebottle the infusion.
